Canada is the second largest country in the world! Well known for its untouched nature, friendly people and its unique blend of cultures, Canada is a very popular tourist destination: Quebec and Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver or even Calgary and the Rockies ... enough to see the world!
Visiting Canada is a pretty massive undertaking. More than 5000 km apart Newfoundland Victoria therefore lead to coast to coast could take 7-10 days or more. To get an idea of the compositon of Canadian territory here is a brief description of its regions and cities that compose:
Quebec is the region culturally Canadian French (English is not the dominant language), it includes the fascinating cities of Quebec (well known for its picturesque old town and the Château Frontenac city) and Montreal which is the heart of the French culture in North America as well as home to some of the finest museums, galleries and festivals. It is the second largest French-speaking city in the world.
The Atlantic provinces: New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia with Halifax and its rich history and architecture in the English colonial style as well Citadel and the Maritime Museum Port Atlantic and finally Prince Edward Island, known for its Acadian culture and unique beauty that lies north of the Nova Scotia region.
Ontario, the most populous province in Canada, which are located in Toronto, the largest and most multicultural cities in Canada and Ottawa, the capital of the country and home to landmarks such as the National Parliament and many great museums like the Museum of Civilization. Do not miss: Niagara Falls and the Great Lakes.
British Columbia and its largest city, Vancouver, perhaps one of the most liberal and multicultural cities in North America, it's a steel town and glass surrounded by an exceptional nature. Do not forget, if you have the opportunity to visit the gardens of Victoria, the capital of this province.
The Prairies (Alberta, Manitoba, Saskatchewan) this region is partly composed of a rocky terrain and agricultural plains, then westbound becomes mountainous. This area is well known for its ski resorts, in particular the massive Rockies. Large cities: Winnipeg, Edmonton and Calgary.
North (Northwest, Nunavut, Yukon) is probably one of the most remote regions of the earth.
Plan your trip to Canada: transportation and budget
Canada has become a destination more accessible: the prices of flights has become relatively affordable and fast, in just seven hours away you're in Montreal! Of course, Canada is huge and if you aim Vancouver on the Pacific coast path will be a little longer. The major cities are connected from Europe, so Montreal, Toronto, Quebec, Vancouver, etc.
If you have enough time, you might consider crossing the Canadian wilderness in the process: the Trans-Canada between Montreal and Vancouver (in a few days anyway).
There railways but also the road: the car is king in Canada, hiring a car is very common in the country. This is an affordable transportation solution, knowing that in addition to the rental price, gasoline is also much less expensive than in France.
Another common mode of transportation: buses, comfortable and punctual, by cons are rather slow and not always given.
Canada's security is generally not a problem, even in large cities, violent crime is rare and usually not touching the visitor. The crime rate in Canada is far lower than that of the United States and France.
Every day, the budget required is quite variable depending on the mode of travel, but overall, Canada is not a particularly cheap destination.
In Canada there is no difficulty in feeding on a budget (sandwiches, cheap restaurants, fast food), while traditional restaurants are about as much as in France.
Note however the practice of "tips" or gratuity is mandatory (we will take care of you remember if you 'forget' ...), and you will be frowned upon if you do not let the right amount! Expect to pay about 10-15% of the bill at a restaurant, and a dollar a drink in the bar! Similarly, prices in Canada are excl, and it is not always easy to know the final amount of the bill!
